Health and Economics: A Strategic Focus for HEC Lausanne

At HEC Lausanne, health has become a key area of research and education, situated at the crossroads of economics, public policy and innovation.

In 2024, the faculty strengthened its role in this field through the Lausanne Center for Health Economics, Behavior and Policy (LCHE), co-founded with Unisanté and the Faculty of Biology and Medicine (FBM). This center conducts interdisciplinary research on health systems, behaviors, and public policies.

The topic is also integrated into teaching, notably through a health management specialization within the EMBA program, as well as dedicated continuing education courses.

Among flagship projects, Professor Jürgen Maurer, a specialist in economics, coordinates the Swiss segment of the European SHARE study, which analyzes the living conditions of people aged 50+ and the effects of social policies. He also studies end-of-life inequalities with LCHE and LIVES as part of the WHO’s Decade of Healthy Ageing.

Meanwhile, other researchers explore health data cybersecurity, the impact of AI, and legal issues related to pharmaceutical regulations.

Finally, a new event launched in 2024, “Health, Economics and Innovation: What Futures?” creates a space for dialogue between scientists, policymakers, and citizens.
